Estella intial ideas

Estella development and initial ideas

Due to only having a two hour lesson to practice my Estella hair and makeup design, I decided to practice the makeup in my own time and focus more on my hair design due to being less confident with the hair.

After watching the different interpretations of the great expectations it was noticeable that Estellas hair was mainly styled as an up do when she appeared as a young women in the film, her makeup also appeared subtle , therefore this was the look I wanted to try and incorporate into my Estella design.

Here is a photograph of my Estella makeup which I practiced at home, for my Estella interpretation I wanted to portray her as quite plain meaning the makeup needed to be subtle. Referring to my research on Victorian makeup their complexion was pale and their makeup needed to be subtle due to the laws and regulations created by Queen Victorian when she came to the thrown , therefore I wanted to included these elements in my design
In order to create my Estella makeup design I firstly, mixed my illamasqua skin base and kryolan foundation together which I  then applied to my face neck and ears to give me a light complexion, in order to make the product appear more subtle on the face I used my buffer brush to blend the product into the skin well.
Next I used the summer tan from my glamour glow pallet to slightly highlight the convex areas of my face such as the cheekbones, temples and m jawline.
I then used a blush mauve from my glamour glow pallet which I used to act as  highlighter.
Next I applied a subtle pink colour from my lip pallet from kryolan to add colour to m lips.
Then I added to my eyelids a white from my kryolan eye shadow pallet.
Next I highlighted the socket areas of my eyes using caraway a light brown colour from my kryolan eye shadow pallet.
Finally I applied a small amount of mascara to my eyelashes to complete my look.

Once I was happy with my Estella look which I had practiced I then transferred the products and style of makeup onto a face chart which i could use as a guideline in my informal assessment in order to recreate exactly the same style of makeup on my partner.

Before thinking of a design for my Estela hairstyle I decided to carry put some research of Victoria hairstyles, these images were the inspirations for my sketch and my first idea , however once I as happy with my makeup design I decided to change my idea to a different hairstyle which  I thought would work well with the makeup.

Here is a sketch of my first hair design for my informal Estella assessment.
The design was the hair being sectioned into two, the top section being styled into a plaited bun and the lower section being styled into ringlets. After creating the makeup for my design I decided to change my idea and thought that an up do would compliment the makeup more.

Here is my first attempt at creating an Apollo knot which was a Victorian hair design which I thought would work well for my Estella assessment. I attempted to create the Apollo knot the day before my technical lesson, however I did not like the outcome of my first attempt I thought the design looked messy and due to my partner having longer hair than the hair I practiced on I became slightly unconfident with creating the Apollo and decided to ask for help in the next technical lesson before my assessment

The hair design which I sketched out and thought would work well with my Estella makeup interpretation was the Apollo knot, however when I tried to create the design in my technical lesson I struggled a little, the design looked messy particularly the bun and I became a little unconfident.

After speaking to Helen about my first attempt at an Apollo knot she also agreed the design looked untidy and suggested making sure the sections were precise by using the pin tail comb would help to make the design look a lot neater.

Here is a photograph o my second attempt at the Apollo knot this time I made sure the sections and the centre parting were precise and I felt much more confident and felt the design look a lot neater.

In order to create the Apollo knot for my Estella assessment I firstly created the centre parting with my pin tail comb. Then I sectioned the hair into three two smaller sections at the side and one larger section with the remaining hair.
Next I secured the larger section into a high ponytail using my hair brush and hair tie.
Then I sectioned the ponytail into four sections with my pin tail comb .
I then created a plait with one of the sections.
The three remaining sections I applied hairspray to and rolled the hair to create a Victorian style bun.
I then situated the plait around the bun.
With the front two sections either side of the head I applied the curlers to the hair and situated the curls around the bun.
Due to my partner having a fringe which had grown out slightly I used the shorter sections of hair to create the same amount of sculpted ringlets on either side of the hair.
