The Jane Austen book' pride and prejudice which was published in 1813 explores the use of the early Victorian hairstyles such as the centre parting and the sculpted ringlets situated to the side of the head particularly in the 1995 version.

After watching the 1995 interpretation of the pride and prejudice it is noticeable the Elizabeth Bennett the main character and her sisters are wearing a bonnet to complete their centre parting sculpted ringlet hairstyle this makes the Victorian women appear elegant. Once the bonnets had been removed it was noticeable that the characters hair were styled into a bun which was usually plaited, this also conveys to the audience what Victorian womens hair was like in the early Victorian era.

It is noticeable that the men in the film such as Mr Darcey who falls in love with Elizabeth Bennett, wear top hats as an indication of wealth, the oversize sideburns are also an indication of the early Victorian era, supported by usually curly locks or a side parting.

The 1995 pride and prejudice trailer is a strong source of evidence to support early Victorian hairstyles .
The ballroom scene I feel is the strongest part of the film to convey the early Victorian hairstyles, the five sisters hair is styled into a Victorian bun with oose curls and a floral kind of accessory incorporated into the design.

I chose the film pride and prejudice 1995 due to it clearly portraying the use of early Victorian hairstyles such as the centre parting and the side curls for women along with the side parting and slightly longer locks for men.

Late Victorian hairstyles for TV and film

Sherlock Holmes which was published in the 1800s was later released as a TV series and film. The 2009 interpretation of the novel can be considered as a more modern take on the late Victorian hairstyles. After looking at character Irene Adler who was played by Rachel McAdams it is noticeable to the hair is become much more elaborate, the centre parting has disappeared and the sculpted curls have shifted from the sides of the head to the back. Many of Irene Adlers hairstyles are also completed with a style of hat which portrays her wealth.

After Analysing the Sherlock Holmes film poster it is noticeable that the modern take of the late Victorian hairstyles became shorter and more groomed as the period came to an end. Hairstyles were often accompanied by a moustache sideburns or beard which was shaped neatly. Men often accompanied their hairstyles as with hats as did women. The tall style top hat which Sherlock Holme's assistant is seen to be wearing also portrays wealth in the Victorian era.

I chose the film Sherlock Holmes 2009 due to even though it being a slightly more modern interpretation on the late Victorian hairstyles the audience can still clearly understand the period of time in the film in relation to the hair .

I also really like how the hair in the film has been styled I feel it works well in relation to  characters and their costumers for example Irene Alders elaborate curls completed with a wealthy floral style of hat and Sherlock Holmes assistant short crew cut hair completed with a top hat a groomed walrus moustache.
