Quentin and Mrs Laderman moodboards

Mood Boards

In order to convey my understanding of my chosen TV series and two chosen character ideas and inspirations, I decided to gather several images conveying my ideas a present my information as a mood board.

My chosen TV series was the American Horror story season four the freak show, the information I gathered on my mood board is the characters involved in the series, the hair and makeup designs, the logo of the TV series . some of the characters include the use of Femme Fetale, horror and a burlesque element which is what I researched in order to gain several ideas for my two characters, Quentin and Mrs Laderman.

I was quite happy with the outcome of my production mood board, I feel it clearly displays images showing my chosen TV series and the character styling in terms of the hair and the makeup. The background colour I have chosen is a bright red to portray horror.

The next mood board I created was Mrs Laderman a forty year old neighbour to Claudia, who likes to play mind games. After researching into my chosen series and creating a mood board, I decided I wanted to character styling to include an element of burlesque and femme Fetale, with the circus element incorporated into my design portraying the freak show.

I was quite happy with the outcome of my Mood board I felt it clearly displayed the use of Femme Fetale and burlesque in terms of the characters hair makeup and clothing inspirations.
I created a mood board presenting my ideas for my second character Quentin, an imaginary boyfriend to Claudia . After researching into the American Horror story season four the freak show, I decide to write an add on story line for the character, I decided Quentin was going to be a human puppet which was part of the freak show and controlled by Mrs Laderman Therefore the images I gathered included the use of horror and special effects along with the circus element incorporated in order to relate to my chosen series. After researching into my chosen series I noticed the TV series was set in the 1950s in Jupiter Florida , therefore I decided to include images of 1950s hair and fashion for my Quentin character idea.

I was generally quite happy with the outcome of my Mood board I felt it clearly showed my ideas and inspirations in terms of the hair make up and choice of clothing.

gothic horror

Gothic horror

During Kats lesson we had an introduction to the Mrs Laderman, Quentin and Claudia characters, the character briefs an the 12 TV series to choose from. We also learnt about the attractions to gothic horror .

Why do we love gothic horror?

  • fascination with death
  • the supernatural
  • we like to be scared
  • possibility of salvation
  • opportunity to see things that are Tasco
  • Affinity with the monster within all of us
  • Addressing mans and inhumanity to man

Target audience

The average statistics of men who watch horror movies are 14-35 year olds , and the average statistics of women who watch horror are 18-49 year olds. Over the years the statics of women watching horror movies has increased significantly, why is horror so appealing to women?

TV horror series such as the walking dead is a popular horror genre for women. women also like to watch horror movies or TV series where the female character is a heroin for example Buffy the vampire slayer. Another reason as to why women are so intrigued with horror is they like to be scare.

Gothic novel to film

A typical gothic novel, usually explores the use of a hero or heroine, the supernatural, a villain, buildings and atmospheric weather to set the scene. Gothic novels are now being transformed into popular blockbuster movies from the likes of Bram Stokers Dracula made by universal  to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. American horror is a new style of horror which has become popular with male and female audiences, it usually incorporates the use of haunted pasts as well as social and political problems . Actresses of the 1960s who were known to have starred in horror were tired of the same old horror roles as a result a new form of gothic was created, incorporating the use of architecture and literature together. Gothic

The supernatural

The fascination with supernatural is a huge element incorporated into a gothic horror novel, film or TV series , horror would not be complete without it. The supernatural first originated in 1848 in America with the Foxes family. Target Audiences liked the use of a human interfering with the unnatural or prayers or sorcery  and also the use of building a bridge between two worlds such as the living and the afterlife.

Quentin final character design

Quentin

Here Is a close up photograph of my character Quentin's hair and makeup. Many of the other photographs on the blog convey the characters styling from a mid length shot, facial close up and side shot.
I wanted to create a character which resembled the Joker , and incorporated an element of the 1950s into the styling . The human puppet was the name I wanted to use to sum up to my target audience the characters role in chosen TV horror series the American Horror Story season 4 the freak show.

Firstly I asked my model to change into chosen outfit, which was a white shirt and waistcoat. I chose this outfit due to it being quite plain, I wanted the main focus to be the makeup and hair styling. The outfit also resembled the 1950s which was when season 4 of the American horror story was set.

I then started to create Quentin's makeup, by firstly applying a white foundation base by Illamaqua to the face , neck and ears which I blended out using my buffer brush. Next I applied a black supracolour to the eyelids and under the eyes, to make the makeup appear more rough I smudge the eye makeup using my thumb.  Then I used my grey and black eye shadow from my Kryolan pallet to contour the face. Next I used red supracolour and my angled brush to draw a thin triangle above and underneath the eyes, I then used fake blood to add depth to the red triangles.

Next I started to create the joker inspired smile, using gelatine from screen face which I heated in the microwave and applied from the corners of the mouth extended out into an over sized smile using a spatula. Once the gelatine was dried I then applied my Illamaqua loose powder to set the product. Using dark red , pink and black supracolour I added depth to the mouth colouring the darker areas of the mouth darker red to black and the lighter areas of the mouth pink. I then used fake blood to fill in the smile and a textured orange sponge to add texture to the mouth and in order to complete my look.

Next I applied a special effects cut which I prepared earlier to the wrist, I stuck the prosthetic to the skin using latex and blending the product into the ski using foundation from my Kryolan pallet. Finally to make the cut appear more raw I reapplied blood to the cut. On the other wrist I recreated the makeup , by firstly applying cinewax to the wrist and blending the product using a spatula, I then used latex and tissue paper to layer up the wound and create a skin like effect. Once that was dried I then used scissors to create a cut in the skin . Using dark red and black I applied colour to the wound. I then used a needle and thread to create stitches effect around the wrist. Finally to complete the special effects look I applied blood to the wound.

In terms of the hair I sectioned the hair into a prominent side parting using my pin tail comb, I then sleeked the my models fringe back of his face and applied a gel to the hair to create a sleek greasy 1950s resembled hairstyle.

When taking my Photographs I worked in a small group with people who had background experience on photography in order to give me advice and feedback on lighting skills in order to highlight the best qualities of my makeup skills. I also decided to shot my characters hair and makeup in front of a curtain pole, in order to give the audience the feeling of a puppet at a show in front of a curtain, I used string which I attached to my models wrists ad to the curtain pole to complete my character styling.

I was generally quite happy with the outcome of my Quentin character, I liked the outcome of the hair and the application of makeup used around the mouth to create a joker like smile. I also felt my chosen colour scheme worked well and my chosen outfit resembled the 1950s. The only thing I feel I could have improved on was perhaps making the eye make up a little more even, however the rough makeup look I feel works well with the element of horror. Another thing I was slightly disappointed with was the makeup applied around the wrist , the prosthetic which I created earlier and applied to the skin using latex looked like it was blended into the skin well, however the makeup on the other wrist looked a little messy and thick, I felt the latex wasn't blended into the skin well enough and the makeup looked to heavy. Due to being unhappy with the outcome of the second wrist I used editing skills in order to make the makeup appear more realistic.

The photograph on he left I feel is a fantastic shot , however I feel the miscoloured wrist lets the image down a little
Due to shooting my character makeup on location which was in a cabin, the lightening was rather yellow, however when shooting the makeup and hair the character was shot under a white light, therefore the makeup on the wrists appear slightly miscoloured in comparison to the rest of my models arm, particularly on the wrist which appeared to have more heavier makeup application. This can be considered as a mistake and something to take on board for future reference, the lighting skills.

Here is the same photograph as the one above , in this photograph I used my editing skills to edit the wrist and make it neater in order to see what it would look like . Although the wrist looks slightly different colour to the rest of the arm still this was due to applying the makeup under yellow lighting due to shooting on location and shooting the photographs under a white light I feel the by slightly tidying the wrist makeup up it looks much more neater, I achieved this by using the clone tool on Photoshop to clone certain parts of the wrist in order to get rid of the sharp line.

Here is a photograph of makeup before shooting under white lighting, in this photograph the lighting appears quite shadowed and yellow , due to shooting on location. I shot my final images using a white light.

Here are some of my final images of my Quentin character, the curtain behind him I felt looks as if he is in a show as a human puppet, I decided to experiment with adding different filters onto some of my final images in order to make it look like a spotlight and to make the photograph appear older, due to my Chosen Horror series, the American horror story the freak show being set in the 1950s.

Here is another one of my final images I applied a darker filter to the image to make the image appear more shadowed, I feel by using this filter its emphasised the mouth makeup and the red around the eyes .

Burlesque

Burlesque

what is Burlesque?

Burlesque Is a show which is usually a theatrical piece of art incorporated with an element of comedy , exaggeration and striptease, it originated in the 1940s but was still popular throughout the decades with many iconic Burlesque dancers such as from Sally Rand to Dita Von Teese.

For my second part of the gothic horror topic, I have to create two characters for a chosen TV series, I have chosen to recreate Quentin an imaginary boyfriend to Claudia and Mrs Laderman a neighbour to Claudia . I have chosen The American horror story season four the freak show to recreate two characters for. After my presentation to my class and lecturer, I was given the advice to research in to Burlesque in order to help me with my final idea for Mrs Laderman. Her look is going to include an element of the 1950s makeup which was when the season was set and Femme Fetale.

Burlesque 2010

in order to  get a greater understanding on the costume design hair and makeup for Burlesque, I decided to watch 2010 musical burlesque starring Christina Aguilera and Cher. In terms of the hairstyling the Burlesque characters hair is mainly styled into curls and the eye makeup is quite bold supported with a eyeliner flick over the arch of the eye and  a shade of red lipstick. In terms of the costumes the Burlesque dancers are mainly seen wearing heels with tight skimpy clothing usually covered in glitter or sequins.

Another film that explores the use of burlesque is the Moulin rouge 2001starring Nicole Kidman, the romantic musical explores the use of long curls , corsets and suspenders. The makeup is styled as a pale complexion, with piercing red lips and an eyeliner flick, after analysing the film I feel I mainly focuses on the costume design rather than the makeup and hair.

 Burlesque makeup

Analysing the image of the Burlesque dancer, the makeup is very sharp and bold, the eyebrows are strong and sculpted , the lip colour application is a strong shade of red and the eye makeup is very bold, the yellow colour applied to the eye lid contrasts well with the black eye shadow applied to the eye sockets. The eye makeup is completed with a eyeliner flic and minimal amount of mascara. The complexion is also pale supporting the 190s style of makeup.

Overall I really like the application of makeup, however the yellow eye shadow wouldn't have been my choice of colour incorporated into this look.

Here is an example of gothic inspired Burlesque makeup. I really like the choice of colour scheme used for this makeup.  I like the strong purple and black eye application blended with a white eye shadow to highlight the brows, however im not too keen on the style of flicks underneath the eyes . I like how the cheekbones are highlighted with a strong pink and the piercing red lipstick which completes the look. The pale complexion also used in this makeup supports the 1950s style of makeup.

Famous Burlesque dancer, Dita Von Teese conveys the style of burlesque makeup, which I feel relates to the 1950s .
Her complexion is pale , her eyebrows are strong here eye shadow application is pale completed with an eye liner flick, lining the arch of the eye , and a  soft pink applied to the cheeks. The style of makeup is completed with a red lipstick.
I really like the style of makeup its quite simple but relates to the 1950s and I feel would also work well with horror TV series the American Horror series.
After researching into burlesque inspired makeup, I feel the Dita von Teese style makeup would work well with my character and chosen Horror series, I am going to consider using elements from the makeup design for my Mrs Laderman character.

Burlesque hair

The Dita Von Teese image which can be seen above, shows a prominent burlesque hairstyle, the hair is sleek, with a strong side parting. The hair is quite straight and rolled under at the ends, the hair falls just below the jawline and reminds me of the 1950s Page boy brush boy hair cut after  carrying out some thorough research on 1950s hairstyles.

Another famous burlesque dancer , sally rand started her carer in the late1920s has her hair styled into a sleek side parting and curled into tight curls. Her hair also seems as though she has though she is wearing hair pieces to make her hair appear longer and more fuller.

another famous burlesque dancer is Marliyn Monroe look alike Dixie Evans (1926-2013)  her hair is situated into a strong centre parting and her hair is styled into tight curls.  This hairstyle I feel would work well with my Mrs Laderman character for the American Horror series. The overall look I wanted to achieve with my Mrs Laderman look in terms of the hair and makeup is an element o femme Fetale and burlesque as well as the 1950s style.

Burlesque fashion

After researching into burlesque fashion, it is noticeable that majority of the costumes tend to be corsets accompanied with suspenders and heels The colours scheme usually tend to be royal colours such as reds and blues  or bright colours such as pinks.. Sequins, lace, silks, glitter and velvets are popular materials which a burlesque costume is made from. The accessories usually accompanied with a burlesque costume I feathers, pearls, jewels or a boa.

here is a  photograph of a women wearing a burlesque costume, the costume over looks like it is made from a lace material. The colour scheme is black and red. The main elements of a costume is a corset accompanied with lace, jewels  a frilled edge. Accompanied with a pair of suspenders. I feel the costume also portrays to the audience an element of gothic
I created a mood board in order to convey my understanding of burlesque, I gathered many images in terms of the costume design, and hair and makeup design in order to incorporate the style in to my character idea for Mrs Laderman.
Here is my sketch of burlesque styled hair, although my sketch isn't great what I wanted to convey in my interpretation was, hair which is styled into a side parting and then long loose curls accompanied with an accessory such as flowers or a top hat.
Here is a sketch of my Burlesque styled makeup after some thorough research it is noticeable that the eye makeup application is quite heavy and the makeup is completed with a red shade of lipstick.
In order to create my look I firstly applied a summer tan blusher from my glamour glow pallet to the convex areas of the face then blush mauve which acted as a highlighter, I also applied a pink from my kryolan pallet to act as a blusher to the cheeks. Next I applied a pink and purple to the eyelids and a white underneath the eyebrows, finally to complete to the eye application I applied a black supracolour using a fine liner brush to act as an eyeliner and mascara. Finally to complete my look I applied a bright red from my lip pallet by kryolan to the lips.

I was generally quite happy with outcome of my face chart I felt the colours I had chosen work worked well together and I blended the colours in well. The only thing I feel I could have improved on was the lip application could have been neater.

Here is my second attempt at burlesque style makeup , firstly I applied caraway a colour eyeshadow from my kryolan pallet to the convex areas of the face, then I applied a blush mauve to act as a highlighter, I then applied a light pink from my kryolan eye shadow pallet to act as a blusher to the cheeks. Next I applied a brown gold and black to the eyelids from my neutral Illmasqua pallet. I also applied a white from the same pallet to underneath the eyebrows , I used the brown from the same pallet and my rounded blending brush to create eyebrows, finally to complete the eye application I applied a black supracolour which acted as an eyeliner and mascara to the yes using a fine liner brush Finally to complete the look I applied a red from my lip pallet to the lips

I was generally quite happy with the outcome of my face chart I felt the dark eyes and the red lips worked well together and I also felt I blended the colours well together, the only thing I feel I could have improved on was blending the eye application together a little better.
here is my attempt at a burlesque hairstyle, I was unhappy with the outcome I feel the hairstyle appears quite  messy , the style I was trying to portray after researching into many images was a prominent side parting accompanied with a side fringe and curls. In order to create this look I firstly sectioned the hair into a side parting then curled each section of hair using my curling tongs . Finally to complete the look I slightly backcombed the hair.

Here is my attempt at burlesque styled makeup in order to create this look I firstly applied an olive foundation to my face, then I applied a bronzer from and highlighter to contour my face using my sculpting powder duo pallet by illmasqua. Then I applied to the top of my cheekbones a pink from my blusher powder duo by illmsqua. Taking into consideration burlesque eye makeup is quite heavily applied I then began shading my eyes from dark to light using the black brown gold and then white from my illmasqua pallet, I blending the product into my eyelids using my rounded blending brush. Next I applied mascara and an eyeliner flick by using my black supracolour and fine liner brush. Finally to complete my look I applied a red mac lipstick to my lips.

I was generally quite happy with the outcome of my makeup design I felt my choice of colours worked well together and I also blended in the eye makeup In well

1950s hair and makeup

The 1950s

For the second part of my gothic horror topic, I have been required to created two characters for a chosen horror series, I have chosen to recreate Quentin, an imaginary boyfriend to Claudia and Mrs Laderman, Claudia's neighbour who are going to be two characters for the American horror story season four the freak show. After some thorough research on the programme, the American horror story is set back in the 1950s in Louisiana, therefore I have decided to research into the 1950s fashion, hair and makeup in order to give my elements which I can use in my character styling in order to relate them to the correct time period.

The 1950s had so many iconic women throughout the era, from Audrey Hepburn , Sophia Loren , Doris day and Marilyn Monroe , these women were well known for their hairstyles as well as iconic looks. When recreating my characters for the American horror story in terms of the hair for my Mrs Laderman character I will take into consideration Marilyn Monroe's curls and Audrey Hepburn's classic up do in order to relate the correct period of time to my characters styling.

1950's hair-women

The 1950s was known for its iconic hairstyles, such as Marilyn Monroe's platinum curls, Sydney  Guilaroff was the first hairdresser to be credited for his talent in styling hair for Hollywood actresses and movies.

Women preferred their hair to look natural in the 1950s, even if it had to be achieved by using products and perming hair in order to create curls. A women's hair in the 1950s was either long or short, the length varied. Perming the hair was usually achieved by wetting the hair and then applying pin curls to the hair in different directions in order to apply volume to the hair. Roller work was another technique used to curl the hair.

The Italian cut supported by Sophia Loren was a popular hairstyle incorporated into Hollywood movies of the 1950s, the hair was styled very short with soft curls framing the face.

Another popular style of the 1950s was curled or waves in the hair, many women seemed to curl or wave the longer sections of their hair but however keep the crown area quite straight.  The Bubble cut and poodle cut were two famous hairstyles which explored the used of incorporating tight curls into shorter hair.

Younger women of the 1950s were seen supporting a ponytail with a light fringe incorporated into the style. The brushed under bob which was known as the ' pageboy cut' was another popular hairstyle for women f the 1950s, the hair was overall quite flat and sleek and the ends of the hair was curled and brush under , falling just below the jawline.

Towards the end of the era, the hairstyles started to incorporate volume into the hair. The bouffant which became popular during the end of the 1950s, was a style which explored the use of volume with the use of roller work and hairspray. The bouffant hairstyle was usually seen accompanied by jewels or a bower rather than a style of hat which would disguise the volume of the hair and make it appear rather flat.

Anonymous. (unknown). hair on pinterest. Available: https://www.pinterest.com/hummydum/hair/. Last accessed 19/04/15.

The natural look also became popular with black women at the beginning of the 1950s, they would turn to straightening their hair and applying chemicals relaxers into their hair in order to make their appear ' natural' . Some women during the era also supported wigs rather than ruining and applying product to their hair. Towards the end of the era, black women started to avoid straightening and applying chemical to their hair as the natural look was coming to an end.

In the 1950s women started to apply colorant to their hair, from henna which gave the hair an auburn tone to bleach in order to achieve Marilyn Monroe's platinum locks. Some women also turned to applying metallic powders to their hair in order to achieve streaks of gold and silver.

Many of the popular hairstyles of the 1950s could not have been completed without the use of hats, such as the lampshade and flower pot, extra pieces of hair and wigs, as well as headbands made from a variety of materials .

After researching into women's 1950's hairstyles I am considering incorporating the natural looks, of  volumecurls into my character styling for Mrs Laderman, her overall look is going to include the 1950s, femme Fetale and burlesque.

1950s hairstyles -men

During the 1950s men were known for applying oil based products to their hair in order to achieve their sleek side parting hairstyles, the royal crown and black and white are just a couple of well known named products which men would use on their hair in the 1950s, these products kept a mans hairstyle styled as a sleek wave and usually required a special shampoo or washing liquid to remove the greasy product.

Many iconic males of the 1950s used the sleek side parting  hairstyle incorporated with a wave or curl , from Elvis Presley to James Dean. Many celebrities today are seen supporting the 1950s hairstyle.

After researching into 1950s male hairstyles, I think I may incorporate the sleek hairstyle into my character styling for Quentin, I feel it would work well with the makeup as well as relating to the correct time period.

1950s makeup

The 1950s was a well known era for glamour, and iconic fashion. The makeup of the era, which women wore was usually pastel colours complete with a piercing red lipstick. A pale complexion was a popular element of a women's makeup and had been also popular with women many from many other decades such  the Victorians.

After researching into 1950s makeup, he makeup appeared quite minimal in comparison to modern times, the pale complexion was accompanied by a light blush and pastel coloured eye shadow, a small mount of mascara was known to ha been brushed over the lashes and a small amount colour was brushed through the brows in order to make them appear thinner , the eye application was finally completed with  a fine liner applied over the arch of the eyelid.

After researching into 1950s makeup I will take into consideration the style of makeup in the 1950s, however due to my chosen horror series being the American horror story season four the freaks show I want to incorporate the circus theme into my style of makeup therefore I am going to research into 1950s burlesque makeup.

I created a mood board of images gathered together to convey the different styles of hair and makeup ideas . By presenting the different ideas as a mood board this allowed me to look at the different styles and develop my ideas for my two final characters for my chosen TV series. I researched into the 1950s due to my chosen TV series being set in 1952 in Jupitar Florida.
Here is a sketch of my interpretation of a 1950s male hairstyle although it is unclear due to it being sketched in pencil, my interpretation shows a sleek side parting hairstyle.

Here is another sketch of a female 1950s hairstyle the sketch shows the hair being styled into a side parting and side into curls framing the face.

Here is another sketch of a female 1950s hairstyle the sketch shows the hair being styled in to a side parting, the top section of hair being styled and rolled into two pin tail styled curls and the remainder of the hair being styled into curls . Majority of the hair is also pulled back of the face.

Here is a face chart which I created conveying my understanding of the 1950s style of makeup, in order to create this look I firstly applied caraway a light brown from my eye shadow pallet by kryolan to highlight the convex areas of the face, then I applied a light pink from my kryolan eye shadow pallet to the cheekbones to add colour , then I used bush mauve m my glamour glow pallet to act as a highlighter. Next I applied a light brown from my eye shadow pallet to the eye sockets and a white to the eyelids and underneath the brows which I created using my rounded blending brush and brown eye shadow. Finally to complete the eye application I applied a black supracolour using my fine liner brush to act as an eyeliner and mascara. Finally to complete my look I applied a red from my lip pallet to the lips.

I was generally quite happy with the outcome of my face chart I felt it conveyed the 1950s style of makeup well the makeup was also subtle and the makeup was blended together well.
Here is my attempt at a 1950s hair design, I was unhappy with the outcome due to the curls being different lengths and also the hairstyle looking quit messy. In order to create this look I sectioned the hair into a side parting and curled each section using my curler then I took he top two sections of hair and create to rolled pieces of hair which I secured in place using several hair pins.

Here is my attempt at creating a 1950s style makeup, I took into consideration the pale complexion and therefore applied an olive foundation base which I mixed together with illamasqua skin base, then once the product looked even due to using my buffer brush I then applied my illmasqua loose powder to secure the makeup. Next I applied minimal amount of colour to the convex areas of the face in order for the makeup to appear natural then I applied a pink from my blusher powder duo by illmasqua to the top of my cheekbones. I then took into consideration 1950s eye application is usually a pastel colour therefore I applied a light purple from my eye shadow pallet by kryolan to my eye sockets and a white form the same pallet to my eyelids and under my brows Finally to complete my eye application I applied a eye liner flick using a fine liner brush ad my black form my supracolour pallet. Finally to complete the look I applied a light red from my lip pallet by kryolan to my lips.

I was Generally quite happy with the outcome of my 1950s style makeup I felt I captured the 1950s look well by using pale colours in order to make the makeup appear natural.

Here is a side shot of my 1950s style of makeup I feel this image highlights the makeup applied to the cheekbones.
