What is high definition ?
High definition has up to five times more detail than normal definition, allowing an audience to view TV in a much different light, meaning the images which appear on the screen will be crystal clear and the colours will be much brighter. This includes channels such as the BBC and various channels on sky and Freeview.Anonymous. (unknown). what is HD and how do we recieve these channels. How will HD effect makeup artists?
suzanne patterson. (unknown). The high impact of resolution on makeup. Available: http://www.creativeartistryfx.com/high_resolution_media.pdf. Last accessed 02/04/15I came across an article by Suzanne Patterson which explains in clear detail the effect high definition has on makeup artists which really makes you think.
HD allows an audience to see an blemishes pours or wrinkles which wouldn't necessarily appear on a standard definition image, a persons true form such as their features and hair are also much clearer in high definition making a makeup artists job much more difficult.
Layered up foundations, patchy makeup , unblended makeup and makeup different colour to the clients skin tone are just some of the flaws and errors occurred in the industry of makeup. Although blemishes appear noticeable even with makeup layers of makeup will not cause the blemish to appear unnoticeable instead it will divert the audiences attention to the clients makeup application.
The image of Angelina Jolie from Marie Claire magazine is just one example of media makeup gone wrong, after reading the article a powder was applied to Angelina Jolie which was used high definition images as well as 'moving light photography' however a camera flash which did not work with the powder applied unfortunately caused the powder to appear prominent and patchy on the actresses skin.

Standard definition
whilst reading through the article by Suzanne Patterson on high definition and how it affects makeup artists, what I found really interesting was how makeup artists worked with standard definition, due to the resolution being lower meaning the pictures weren't as crisp with vivid colour, this was an advantage to makeup artists hiding any significant make up errors and also making the skin appear more smooth. In terms of special effects the lower resolution also worked as an advantage to the makeup industry and film making the effects appear much more realistic to its target audience. How to keep up with higher definition in the makeup artist world.
Being a makeup artist in the media can be difficult especially when technology keeps becoming more in depth and updated, by a makeup artist constantly having an understanding on the latest science and technology will allow makeup artists to think of techniques which will work with the cameras and lighting for example. In order for makeup to work on camera, the makeup needs to appear light and subtle almost unnoticeable . Some makeup artists working in media may even turn to airbrushing techniques as the high definition progresses
