Quentin and Mrs Laderman presentation

During our last week before Easter Break, we had to individually carry out a presentation conveying our ideas in terms of the hair and makeup for two characters for the second part of our topic. The characters had to relate to the prewritten brief and also to a chosen TV horror series. The presentation had to include our target audience, character backgrounds an mood boards also.
( due to being unable to attach the PowerPoint onto my blog, I have copied and pasted all the relevant information and images n order to convey my ideas and what was spoken about in my five minute presentation.)

The American Horror story-
The freak show

After Looking in to a variety of horror series ,I have chosen to relate my looks to the fourth series of the American Horror story ( the freak show )
I have chosen this series due to being able to create an interesting story line for my two characters Quentin and Mrs Laderman.
I also wanted to link the idea of horror and fun together in order to appeal to a target audience of teenagers.
The American horror story freak show is set back in 1952 and located in Jupitar Florida.
Due to the series being set back in the 1950s I want to link the style into my final design in terms of the hair and makeup.

Audience demographics

After researching into statics there is a higher percentage of women watching horror movies today than there are men.
Statics say the average age watching horror is 14-35 for men and 18-49 for women.
The real question is why are horror films so appealing to women?
People are attracted to horror due to liking the thought of fear and being scared.
In order to appeal to a wide audience I wanted my look to include the horror element in my hair and makeup design  which I feel will appeal to the male audience but also keep the look very colorful and fun which I feel will relate to the the younger generation and women.
By including these elements in my design I feel this will also work well with chosen TV series and the overall theme which is the circus.

Mrs Laderman

Character storyline:
After following in the footsteps of sister Elsa
Mrs. Laderman decides to take control becoming  the new ring leader of her very own freak show seeking revenge after Mordrake reincarnated Elsa as a freak , she  may seem like a middle age female fetal women but turns evil seeking for those who having interests in the supernatural and horror and turns them into exhibits for her own show.
Mrs Laderman has close relationship with neighbour Claudia but plays mind games wit her using her latest recruit Quentin as a weapon seeking revenge on Claudia the daughter of mordrake.
The overall look I am going for in terms of the makeup is a female fetale , 1950s style makeup , due to the TV series linking to the circus the makeup will also be very colourful to convey this. Mrs Ladermans makeup will include:
-A strong red lipstick
-strong cheekbones
-heavy eye makeup
-an eyeliner flick
Mrs Laderman also is an evil women seeking for exhibits for her show in order to include an element of horror , the makeup will also include:
-blood around the mouth
-white eyelids
-Heavy red makeup around the eyes
In terms of the hair a sleek bun or the marseille style wave I feel will convey the period of time in which the TV series was set which is the 1950s.
By styling the hair and makeup with these elements I feel this could appeal to both male and women .
Development of Mrs. Laderman

When researching into Mrs Ladermans look and creating the background story for the character the first word which came to my head was ‘veiled’- which is to be covered or concealed, Mrs Laderman to most people is seen as an ordinary middle age women in her 40’s but in reality she is an evil women seeking for those for her freak show.
The keyword inspired me to look for makeup design which disguise Mrs Ladermans true colours.
The keyword also inspired me to think of a character plot /background story about Mrs laderman.
The scene I see my character playing in reference to my hair and makeup design ideas is : is an ordinary person with a secret identity as a ring leader of the freak show.
What do I now need to do?
Now I have thought of several key words and a scene linking to my keyword which is ‘veiled’ I now need to think of props which could be included in my design such as a top hat or a mask ETC.
I now need to narrow down my ideas to think of a clearer idea in order to create a face chart which I can develop my look on.

Quentin

Quentin- after having an interest in the supernatural and horror has become Miss Ladermans latest recruit , the human puppet, meaning Quentin is trapped in his own mind and body and being controlled by Mrs Laderman as a freak and a weapon against Claudia.
After years of not being connected to the outside world except for the likes of Mrs. Laderman Claudia starts to go insane believing Quentin is her imaginary boyfriend who changes according to her moods, but in reality he changes due to being controlled by Mrs. Laderman which gives the audience the perception of Quentin being a freak .
In order to develop my character the hair and makeup will be :
The hair will be Sleaked back using gel.
The makeup will be dark around the eyes and the cheekbones (Pete Doherty makeup)
Stiches across the mouth to convey he is trapped
The face will look like it is made from wood by creating the wood grain on the face to make him look like a puppet
A zipper brain situated on his forehead to convey his mind is being controlled.
An open chest showing his ribcage and body parts to convey his body is being controlled.
Strings tied tightly around his hands with blood marks around them to convey another element of being controlled.
I feel by styling Quentin as a human puppet this look will  include and element of fun as well as horror which I feel will appeal to the younger generation as well as men and women.

Development of character

The key word I choose was stitches due to wanted include this as a prominent effect on my final makeup design.
The stitches across Quentins mouth which I want to include in my makeup design idea gives the audience an idea of his background story.
His background story is: he has no control of his mind mouth or body.
The key word inspired me to think of a prominent background story for Quentin.
it also inspired me to research further into horror and special effects.
What do I need to do now?
I now need to narrow down all of my ideas to create a clear face chart for my final Quentin design.

What do I need to do now

I need to narrow down my ideas to have a clearer idea on my final design
I need to create a face chart in which I can develop on.
I need to take into consideration the location on where to shoot my Quentin look.
I need to take into consideration what props I want to include in my look to relate to the scene .
I need to think of how to style the hair for both characters
What are my concerns?
Lack of time in order to create my final design.
-Too many ideas. Which ones to choose?
-The styling not relating to my chosen series.
How can we help you ?
By getting feedback on my ideas will help me to narrow them down and create a face chart to develop on.
Having tutorials and speaking to lecturers about my final look will help me develop my final look and know whether my scene relates to my chosen series

After presenting my ideas to the class, my lecture Sharon gave me feedback in order to think of more thorough ideas which would relate to my chosen TV series: she told me to research into , femme fetale, burlesque, American horror , freak shows and 1950s hair and makeup
