Miss Havisham quotes
The Charles dickens novel which I read seems to be very different in comparison to some of the film interpretations I have researched. I feel the novel includes more detail about Miss Havisham's story and her personality and the quotes have a bigger impact on the reader .
page 75' look at me . you are not afraid of a women who hasn't seen then sun' Miss Havisham says this to Pip when he first visits statis house as a young boy, although this has been quoted in many of the film interpretations such as the 2012 Mike Newell interpretation, I feel it has more of an impact in the novel instantly making the reader question why is this women using this as a reason for a young boy to be afraid of her. The quote also shows elements of gothic horror mystery as well as Victorian beliefs. After some thorough research it is known that women shaded themselves from sunlight. The quote also conveys to the reader Miss Havisham is a paranoid character who has low self-esteem.
page 76 ' what do I touch .your heart. broken.' Miss Havisham says this to Pip on his first visit, this highlights to the reader the women is broken hearted and depressed, and perhaps is going to take her misery out him to make herself feel better.
page 79 'you say nothing of her. tell me in my ear' Miss Havisham asks Pip what he thinks of adopted daughter , this highlights to the reader she is using her as a weapon against love and is shocked when Pip is too afraid too say what he thins of Estella.
page 111 ' its a great cake its a bride cake . its mine' Miss Havisham explains to the Pip about the decaying wedding cake on the table to clear any confusion. This makes the reader think why is this women still got a bridal cake on the table after many years, it also conveys Miss Havisham is still living in the past.
page 117 ' when they lay dead with me in my brides dress on the brides table which shall be done and which will be the finished curse upon time and so much the better if it is on this day!' This conveys Miss Havisham is living in the past and feels trapped and perhaps cursed with the way her wedding day ended, it also makes the reader think what is so dreadful that Miss Havisham feels this way and as if she is cursed. The reader doesn't find out Miss Havisham's background story about the wedding day until further in the book when Hebert Pocket explains to Pip when he becomes a gentlemen and no longer an acquaintance of Miss Havisham.
page 317' she beautiful graceful well grown do you admire her.' Miss Havisham throughout the book has this obsession with finding out how Pip feels towards Estella, and tries to make Pip love her adopted daughter . This makes the reader feel Miss Havisham is trying to seek revenge on Pip using Estella as a weapon after what happened to her on her wedding day.
page 318 ' love love love her' by Miss Havisham constantly repeating herself and demanding Pip to love Estella this shows to the reader she is slightly twisted making Pip fall for Estella in order to break his heart. Due to this quote being constantly repeated throughout th novel and also the film interpretations I feel is a very powerful quote to use in order to highlight the use of romance in the novel as well as Miss Havisham's character and story.
Page 408 conveys the true colours of Miss Havisham and Estella and highlights to the reader there relationship is starting to fall apart.
Estella ' mother by adoption'
Miss Havisham ' did I never give her love'
' call me mad, let her call me mad'
This conveys to the reader Miss Havisham is starting to go mad and is feeling once again betrayed by Estella the only person who had a close bond with the women except for the man who she idolised and conned on her wedding day. It also conveys Miss Havisham is once again starting to break and her guard is starting to come down conveying all her true emotions.
page 409 ' would it be a weakness to show my love' this conveys to the reader when Miss Havisham says this to Estella that she is afraid to show her emotions and has her guard up by conveying loving another and having feelings as being'weak'
page 529 'Are you unhappy' Miss Havisham says this to Pip when he comes to visit her after becoming a gentlemen and finding out Estella is in love with Bentley Drummle. when the reader first comes across this quote they instantly feel this was Miss Havishams doing and feel sympathetic for Pip.
page 605 ' o what have I done. what have I done.' this conveys to the reader Miss Havisham is starting to feel guilt for her revengeful plan of using Estella as a weapon against Pip, convey she does have feelings and emotion.
